As many of you know St. Catherine’s monastery in Sinai has been forced to close due to the security situation in Egypt. This is the third time (I believe) that this has happened in the last 40 or 50 years. The unfortunate fallout of this closing is that the already strained budget of the monastery is becoming even more strained as the tourist income that they would normally receive is denied to them. This situation is concerning as a long term denial of funds could have serious repercussions to this ancient community. Over the weekend I was contacted by some people connected with St. Catherine’s to help in establishing a web presence for a new non-profit foundation with the purpose of raising relief funds for the monastery to make sure that it has the resources to continue its work. I’ll let you know more as the work proceeds.
